Are you trying to figure out if you need standard DVD, HD-DVD or Blu-Ray format

At the risk of making this subject even more complicated than it already is, we will try to sort out the ever-maddening DVD formats. Basically, we have three flavors of DVDs on the scene.
Standard definition DVD (which we will just call regular DVD for now), and two types of High Definition DVD – HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

Regular DVD Disks will play in all three players.

HD-DVD Disks will ONLY play in HD-DVD players.

Blu-Ray Disks will ONLY play in Blu-Ray players and Playstation 3 players.

HD-DVD and Bly-ray play universally in all regions. There is no PAL issue. Same as our standard DVDs are rated 0 Region – play universally.

Conversely, regular DVD players will only play regular DVDs.

Regular DVD players will NOT play HD-DVDs, nor Blu-Ray Disks.

HD-DVD Players will play HD-DVDs or regular DVDs, but NOT BluRay Disks.

Blu-Ray Players will play Blu-Ray Disks or regular DVDs, but NOT HD-DVDs.

BTW, regular DVD disks will look a lot BETTER when played in either high definition player. Also, the difference between high definition and standard definition is substantial. Once you see the difference, you’ll know the difference.
