Nearly a year ago, Kilauea’s long-lasting eruption took a break. Pele “paused” for a month. Scientists puzzled as swarms of earthquakes rattled the summit and east rift zones, but very little lava appeared anywhere. There were indications of magma movement, but nothing surfacing. Finally Kilauea’s main vent, Pu`u `O`o reactivated, forming a lava lake. Scientists were entertained by the constantly changing cauldron for three weeks before it suddenly vanished again. Suddenly, on July 21 st, Kilauea’s current eruption, begins in earnest… Pele burst forth with a brand new fissure eruption… heading downslope east of the Pu`u `O`o vent for the first time since 1992!

Naturally, Tropical Visions was there for Pele’s episode 57 reappearance. She spread flows like fingers over the lava landscape of the Puna as she began her latest masterpiece. She erupted in fissures and flows upslope, forming lava lakes, perched ponds and rootless shields… formations unseen at Kilauea by Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists before now. Emmy Award-winner Mick Kalber documented her advance downslope, through Royal Gardens, past the homes of the few remaining residents there, and into the sea at Waikupanaha. Pele’s appearance on the sea cliffs in early May of 2008 was truly magical… you’ll be captivated by the images and sounds of the sea coupled with Ben Kaili’s marvelous talents on slack key. This is an experience not to be missed. The golds of the lava, the early blue light… the pinks and purple colors mix with the surf and steam to once again reveal the reuniting of Pele, the Goddess of the Volcano and her sister, Na Maka, the Goddess of the Sea
